“My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean”, a traditional folk song from Scotland, is known in several countries, and the subject of the song (“my bonnie”) may refer to a person of any gender. When the sheet music was published in the 1880s it became very popular, especially among college singing groups. Today, the song remains a well-known campfire song that is often taught to children growing up in Western countries. |
